I started BargainChaser.com in 2003 as a way to share info about money- and time-saving deals with other families around Frederick, MD.
In the early days, a calendar of events was central to the site. As a stay-at-home mom of two young girls, I was always on the lookout for inexpensive children’s activities–and had no trouble finding them. The problem was that we often missed activities simply because I had trouble organizing all the information I gathered. The idea of starting a website came to me when I realized that many of my friends were having the same problem.
So one morning I got up early, bought the bargainchaser.com domain, fired up the version of FrontPage that came with my computer, wrote the first post, and sent around an announcement to three or four moms’ clubs. Within a week, I had 50 subscribers–just what I needed to keep me motivated to update the site every month.
As time went on, and my girls started school, the calendar moved out of the forefront. It’s still part of the site, but (I’ll freely admit) it’s pretty lame compared to what it used to be. The emphasis is now more on deals, bargains, and discoveries that I think other people might be interested in–kind of like a Girlfriend’s Guide to Frederick’s Best.
