Free Downloadable Audiobooks from FCPL

County Public Libraries purchases subscriptions to a variety of online databases and other resources, which are then made available to library-card holders for free.

They currently subscribe to two sites that offer free downloadable audiobooks: NetLibrary Recorded Books and OverDrive Audiobooks.

NetLibrary carries popular fiction and non-fiction, Pimsleur foreign language tapes and the bible. Up to 10 titles at a time can be checked out for a period of 3 weeks. Unlimited number of copies of each title are available, so you never have to wait for a title to become available for download. If you’re a first-time NetLibrary user, you’ll need to set up your account with NetLibrary inside the library at a library computer. Then you can access the NetLibrary site remotely.

OverDrive carries popular fiction and non-fiction. Up to 6 OverDrive ebooks or audiobooks at a time can be checked out for a period of 3 weeks. Holds can be placed on materials already checked out. To access OverDrive audiobooks remotely, you just need your library card and password.

Here’s how to download audio books from NetLibrary:

  1. Go to FCPL.org, and click Downloadable Audiobooks and Videos.
  2. Click NetLibrary Recorded Books.
  3. Enter your username and password; then click the Log In button.
  4. Enter your search term in the Basic Search field, and click Search.
  5. From the search results, click Download This Audiobook.
  6. Select a download quality: CD quality (for high-speed connections; allows transfer to your PC and to a portable device), or Radio quality (for dial-up connections; allows transfer to computer only).
  7. After downloading, open the audiobook in Windows Media to acquire the license. Then you can burn the file to CD or download it to a portable device. (The only way to get these audiobooks onto an iPod is to burn them onto CDs then import the CDs into iTunes.)

To download from OverDrive:

  1. Go to FCPL.org, and click Downloadable Audiobooks and Videos.
  2. Click OverDrive AudioBooks.
  3. Click View All AudioBooks.
  4. Choose an audiobook. If an audiobook is not currently checked out, you may select Add to Bookbag; otherwise, click Place a Hold to be notified when this title is available.
  5. You’re prompted to download OverDrive Media Console, if you don’t already have it installed on your computer. OverDrive Media Console is a free, fully-integrated application that allows you to download and listen to OverDrive audiobooks on any Windows computer. It also enables you to create and burn CDs of your audio books (when allowed by the publisher) for use in your car, home stereo, or portable CD player. You’re also prompted to download Windows Media Player (9 Series or newer), which is utilized by OverDrive Media Console to burn CDs or transfer audiobooks to portable listening devices. (Again, the only way to get these audiobooks onto an iPod is to burn them onto CDs then import the CDs into iTunes.)
